Dr. Water

This second video (2018) featured my great-grandfather, Dr. Charles Sheard,  Toronto Medical Health Officer (1893-1910). He fought to reduce water-borne illness and smallpox in the city. Charles was a driving force behind the creation of Toronto’s first water filtration plant and a compulsory smallpox vaccination programme (ultimately defeated by anti-vaxxers of his time).
He was the 2nd owner of the historic family bed in which I now sleep. I was born in what had once been his house on Jarvis Street, featured here in this story of its burning.
